  • March is Colorectal Cancer (CRC) Awareness Month, and ONCOSCREEN is on a mission to raise mass awareness of the disease.
  • Professor Möhler, of the University of Mainz, invited to appear on “Volle Kanne”, a show appearing on German Public-Service TV Broadcaster, ZDF.
  • Möhler suggests regular sports, better diet (such as Mediterranean diet), stopping smoking, and participating in early screening programs as important steps in CRC prevention.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness (CRC) is quickly becoming one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in Europe. The EU-funded project ONCOSCREEN aims to increase the number of people participating in early screening programmes through awareness-raising and the development of various tools and technologies.

March is CRC Awareness Month and marks the beginning of an intensive campaign by ONCOSCREEN to alert European citizens to the importance of early screening when it comes to preventing the development of CRC. The four-year project, funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, contributes to this month’s campaign by developing effective tools that create the conditions for affordable, accessible, and applicable CRC screening to large parts of the population, in order to effectively prevent the development of colorectal cancer.

The participation in initiatives like CRC Awareness Month is vital for a project like ONCOSCREEN, where the tools that are developed will be tested and validated with the participation of European citizens in 10 different countries. This will support the adoption of ONCOSCREEN solutions in public healthcare systems and everyday clinical practices.

Kicking off the campaign early, Professor Möhler, of the University of Medicine, Mainz, appeared on “Volle Kanne”, a show appearing on German Public-Service TV Broadcaster Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF) on the 17th of February. Prof. Möhler demonstrated how various devices that we are developing in ONCOSREEN work, including the breath test being developed, named ONCO-VOC.

Professor Möhler highlighted various risk factors that could increase the likelihood of developing CRC, especially in young people. These risks include the frequent consumption of sports drinks, the consumption of junk food, and obesity. Möhler concluded this appearance by discussing several steps everyone can take to decrease their risk of developing CRC. This includes regular exercise, better diet (such as Mediterranean diet), stopping smoking, and participating in early screening programs.
