Europacolon Portugal
PORTO – PORTUGAL
Brief Biography of Partner
Europacolon Portugal is a non-profit, nationwide patient organisation founded in 2006, dedicated to supporting people affected by digestive cancers, with a particular focus on colorectal cancer. The organisation currently brings together over 1,400 members, including healthcare professionals, researchers, academics, policymakers, and civil society representatives who contribute to its mission.
In Portugal, colorectal cancer remains a major public health challenge. Each year, more than 11,000 new cases are diagnosed, and over 4,500 people die from the disease, making it the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the country.
The high incidence and mortality rates, combined with the persistent gaps in national policies on prevention, screening, and early diagnosis, highlight the urgent need for strong civil society engagement. Europacolon Portugal was created to address this gap — by raising awareness, supporting patients and caregivers, advocating for better policies, and promoting equitable access to care.
